Retirement & pension planning
Almost everyone knows their net salary to the euro. Almost nobody knows their future pension.
The state pension level has been falling for years while life expectancy rises. Anyone in their early forties today will have to manage on considerably less than their final net salary suggests. That difference is called the pension gap, and for most people it is larger than they assume.
The first step is therefore not a recommendation but a number: what will you actually receive, what will you realistically need, and how big is the difference? Only once that number is on the table does it make sense to talk about Riester, Rürup, occupational or private solutions.

Riester is never worth it.
Riester is weak in some situations and very strong in others, for example for families with children. Blanket judgements cost real money here. What matters is your specific case.
For employees, self-employed people and civil servants who want to know where they will actually stand in retirement.

- Planning to move back? Check what you have signed Some savings products require repayment of all state subsidies if you move permanently outside the EU. Not for Croatia, but yes for Bosnia and Serbia.
- Calculating your pension gap: what will actually be missing The average German pension sits below the poverty threshold for a single household. What that means, how to work out your own gap and which 2026 figures apply.
- A pension from two countries: what actually counts You work in Germany and have contribution years back home. The 1968 agreement still applies. What is added together, who pays what, and where people go wrong.
